About SEL at HAMS

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, HAMS incorporated a dedicated SEL team. This group of teachers, administrators, and community based partners has worked tirelessly to ensure students are receiving equitable opportunities to grow and thrive both inside and outside the educational environment. Each student at HAMS receives daily SEL content and lessons, opportunities to engage with peers, brianstorm community-building practices for the building, and demonstrate compassion for themselves and others.

Second Step

HAMS utilizes the Second Step curriculum to deliver SEL content to students across all four grade levels. This evidence-based curriculum proves a weekly video lesson, reflection sheets, activites, opportunities for class meetings, and service-learning projects. Facilitated by the HAMS social worker, Second Step moves students through topics related to Mindfulness & Goals, Bullying & Harassment, Thoughts, Emotions, & Decisions, and Managing Relationships & Conflict.

In order to fully support our students as they work to build the skills and knowledge to become the leaders of tomorrow, we encourage the adults in our student's lives to engage in SEL related conversations at home, as well. Topics, conversation starters, and online resources can be found in the 'for families' tab at the top of the page.
